IELTS Writing Task 2: how to draw a mind-map; with example

I’ve got some requests for explaining how to draw a mind map quickly. So, in this post, I’m providing a sample mind-map with explanations for a better and more organized IELTS Writing Task 2 essay. If you practice doing this kind of mind-map, it will not only save your time but also help you to write to-the-point. Take the first 4/ 5 minutes of IELTS Writing exam and arrange the ideas like this on the question paper. Remember to use a pencil for this. Then, start writing and follow the map while you write each paragraph, especially the body paragraphs.

IELTS task 2: two-sided topic/argument issue

Look at the following sample of Task 2.

Nowadays many people work part or full-time from home. Some people say that working from home has many benefits while others disagree.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

When you start writing the answer, what is your first task? Start writing immediately or think about the topic and points for some time.

It is obviously a great mistake if you write the answers immediately. Never do that. rather, try to organize your thoughts on a piece of paper. You can use the writing question paper for this. Find a small blank space and try to draw an outline of what you are planning to write. It is very important for saving your time later on.

In the middle of the paper write the main topic and circle it. You can do it any way you want. It needs no decoration. Try to be quick here.

On both sides, you should try to add at least 2/3 major points. Here, if you look at the following mind map, you can see that I added 3 points for both benefits and problems of working from home. Remember that your language for the mind map should be very precise and short. Don’t overdo it by adding more tails to it. Write only the most important points. You can add examples for each point too if it is a difficult topic. Thus, you can create a mind map.

It will take good practice to be an expert in mind mapping. However, any examinee with zero preparation can do it. It is very helpful for you because it will save you crucial time while writing and you need not give pause to think about a new point or example.

This map will surely help you to create some other mind maps on different and difficult topics.

Thank you for reading this short article patiently. Now, here I give you three bonus tips for writing task 2.

  1. Remember to keep track of your IELTS mind-mapping practice in a notebook. It will help you to remember the important, logical points.
  2. Never write your answer with a pen. Always use a pencil for achieving a better band. No one can say for sure that he or she can write without mistakes.
  3. Every point you write should contain a logical explanation and example. They will help to elaborate your answer. So, include examples from life experience.

That’s all. I hope the bonus tips are useful for you.
