IELTS Speaking Part 2: Topic card: Describe a foreign person who you have heard or known that you think is interesting; with discussion, model answer and Part 3 questions

A short discussion on the topic card:

Before you start speaking, you should jot down some ideas for the topic card.

Here are some notes that may help you speak fluently:

Think about the phrase ‘foreign person’. Have you ever heard this phrase before?
‘Foreign’ means ‘of, from, in, or characteristic of a country or language other than one’s own’. So, ‘a foreign person’ means ‘a person who lives in any country other than your own/native country’. So, we can talk about any person of any country; the only thing you have to remember is that you must include in your speech in the Speaking Part 2/ topic card section that this person belongs from a different country.

We are going to describe ‘Mr. Elon Musk’ for this cue card.

Add the following information in your speaking part 2 answer:

  • Elon Musk
  • Owner- SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity, Tesla Energy, Neuralink, Dogecoin
  • Ex owner- PayPal
  • South-Africa born American entrepreneur
  • Interesting personality
  • Unconventional entrepreneur
  • Thinks differently
  • Invests in domains beyond his comfort zone
  • Extremely positive about results, doesn’t stop until it’s done

Model answer:

Well, I consider myself a bookworm and I’m an avid reader of different books, magazines, and journals which makes it possible for me to learn about different people from different parts of the world. Some of them are ordinary; a gigantic number of them are extraordinary. For this topic card, I’m going to talk about such a personality who is extremely popular all over the world because of his works and especially for his innovative mind and thinking which makes him an interesting person.

The name of the person is Elon Musk. He is a South-Africa-born American entrepreneur who is currently the owner of SpaceX and Tesla. I watched a documentary on his life named ‘Elon Musk: the Real-Life Iron Man’ around 6 years ago and from that day I became a big fan of him.

He is an interesting personality because he is known as one of the most unorthodox entrepreneurs of the present world. He became successful because of his personality traits and impressive hopefulness on ‘not to stop trying until it’s done’. He always tries to explore beyond the conventional domain and for this particular reason he chose NASA to be his prime competitor which has forced NASA to continue more research towards space exploration.

One of his key interesting attributes of him is his goal to solve the current pressing issues of this globalized world. This is hardly found in other current thriving business people. He is always thinking about solving problems around the world along with his regular businesses.

One other impressive quality of Elon Musk is that he had not confined himself to one project only like many other business magnets. He has explored different branches of the business world and is still exploring more. He used to own PayPal which he has sold to eBay. He owns TESLA, SolarCity, and TESLA Energy. Recently he has founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology startup company to integrate the human brain with AI. Currently, he is investing in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and invented Dogecoin.

I remember one of his best quotes, “When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.”

I think all the attributes that Mr. Musk contains make him an interesting person. He is indeed the real-life Iron Man.
