10 common IELTS words with meaning and example sentences

In IELTS we need a strong background of vocabulary. Without having good vocabulary knowledge or lexical resource, it is quite impossible to get a high band in IELTS reading, writing or speaking. Today I’m going to show you 10 important vocabulary with explanations, synonyms and the usage of them in sentences.

Recommend (verb) – to advise, as an alternative; suggest (a choice, course of action, etc.) as appropriate, beneficial, or the like:

Synonym: advice, suggest, advocate

He recommended the green capsule.

The doctor recommended special exercises for her.

Duplicate (noun) – a copy exactly like an original.

Synonym: copy, facsimile, replica, reproduction

It was a duplicate of the original document.

Overlook (verb) – to disregard or ignore indulgently, as faults or misconduct:

Synonym: ignore, avoid, miss, neglect

Only a parent could overlook that kind of behavior.

Significant (adjective) – having or expressing a meaning; indicative; suggestive

Synonym: important, noteworthy, striking

She gave me a significant wink.

Immediate (adjective) – occurring or accomplished without delay; instant

Synonym: instantaneous, abrupt, direct;

I gave the board an immediate reply.

Obvious (adjective) – easily seen, recognized, or understood; open to view or knowledge; evident.

Synonym: clear, noticeable, apparent

Rayan took an obvious advantage.

Analyze (verb) – to examine critically, so as to bring out the essential elements or give the essence.

Synonym: examine, study, evaluate

Russell analyzed the data and made a report.

Aid (noun) – help or support; assistance.

Synonym: support, assistance, help

Luna came to our aid.

They have aids to deliver in undeveloped regions.

Overwhelming (adjective) – so great as to render resistance or opposition, useless

Synonym: irresistible, overpowering

It was an overwhelming majority of people who voted against him.

Dynamic (adjective) – pertaining to or characterized by energy or effective action; vigorously active or forceful; energetic

Synonym: energetic, lively, active, vibrant, forceful,

He was the most dynamic president of the firm.
