IELTS Cambridge 5 Test A: GT Reading Module

Section 1:

Question 1-7: MAIL ORDER BROCHURE

Questions 1-7: TRUE, FALSE, NOT GIVEN

[In this type of question, candidates are asked to find out whether:

The statement in the question agrees with the information in the passage – TRUE
The statement in the question contradicts with the information in the passage – FALSE
If there is no information on this – NOT GIVEN

For this type of question, you can divide each statement into three independent pieces and make your way through with the answer.]

Question 1: Women’s cotton socks cost less than men’s.

Keywords for this question: women’s cotton socks, cost, less, men’s,

In this brochure, we do not find any information about ‘Women’s cotton socks’.

So, the answer is: NOT GIVEN

Question 2: Men’s silk shirts are available in more than five colours.

Keywords for this question: men’s silk shirts, available, more than, five colours,

The second item in the ‘For under $25’ section says, “Silk shirts M – five sizes, in designer colours, for that special social occasion.”

However, we don’t find any information about the number of colours.

So, the answer is: NOT GIVEN

Question 3: Children’s T-shirts come in a variety of colours.

Keywords for this question: Children’s T-shirts, variety of colours,

Look at the items on ‘For under $25’ section. Item no. 3 says, “T-shirts C – hard-wearing, white with a variety of animal motifs.”

Here, motif = design, (not colour).

This means the information contradicts the question.

So, the answer is: FALSE

Question 4: The child’s jacket has four pockets.

Keywords for this question: child’s jacket, four pockets,

We find about ‘child’s jacket’ in the ‘For under $50’ section. Take a look at item no. 3 here, as it says, “Hooded jacket C – protects from the wind, 4 sizes, large strong pockets.”

Here, it doesn’t say anything about the number of pockets.

So, the answer is: NOT GIVEN

Question 5: If you buy clothes worth $80 in August, you will receive a free alarm clock.

Keywords for this question: buy clothes worth $80, August, receive, free alarm clock,

Take a look at the ‘Additional monthly specials’ section. Here, point no. 2 says, “AugustTravel alarm clock worth $ 19.95 free with purchases of $80 or more!”

The information provided here is a clear match with the question.

So, the answer is: TRUE

Question 6: The charge for special next-day delivery in Australia is $7.95.

Keywords for this question: charge, special next-day delivery, Australia, $7.95,

The answer can be traced in the ‘Postage and packing charges’ section. Take a look at the second option for the charges ‘Within Australia’. It says, “$17.95 for Express Delivery Service (overnight).”

Here, overnight = next-day,

The charge is $17.95; not $7.95. The information in the text contradicts the question.

So, the answer is: FALSE

Question 7: All clothing is guaranteed to arrive within two months for international delivery

Keywords for this question: All clothing, guaranteed to arrive, within two months, international delivery,

The answer can be traced in the ‘Postage and packing charges’ section. Take a look at the first option for the charges ‘Overseas’. It says, “Surface Mail (allow a minimum of two months for delivery).”

Here, a minimum of two months = at least two months, may take more than that time.

The information in the text contradicts the question.

So, the answer is: FALSE

Questions 8-14: New Book Releases

Questions 8-14:  List of headings

In this question type, IELTS candidates are provided with a list of headings, usually identified with lower-case Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc,). A heading will refer to the main idea of the paragraph or section of the text. Candidates must find out the equivalent heading to the correct paragraphs or sections, which are marked with alphabets A, B, C, and so forth. Candidates need to write the appropriate Roman numerals in the boxes on their answer sheets. There will always be two or three more headings than there are paragraphs or sections. So, some of the headings will not be used. It is also likely that some paragraphs or sections may not be included in the task. Generally, the first paragraph is an example paragraph that will be done for the candidates for their understanding of the task.

[TIPS: Skimming is the best reading technique. You need not understand every word here. Just try to gather the gist of the sentences. That’s all. Read quickly and don’t stop until you finish each sentence.]

Question 8: Book A

In the description of Book A, take a look at the first line; it says, “This book describes the creativity of Aboriginal people living in the driest parts of Australia. . . .”

Here, creativity = art, driest parts = desert,

So, the answer is: x (Guide to the Art of the Australian Desert)

Question 9: Book B

Take a look at the first line again for Book B, “Pocket-sized maps and illustrations with detailed information on the nesting sites and migration patterns of Australia. . . . . .”

Here, Pocket-sized maps and illustrations with detailed information on the nesting sites and migration patterns = field guide to native birds,

So, the answer is: i (Field Guide to Native Birds of Australia)

Question 10: Book C

The description of book C contains some words and phrases. In the first line, we can see ‘the avid hiker’ which means someone who enjoys walking. In the next line, there is a phrase ‘journeys on foot through the forests’.

So, the answer is: v (Bush walking in Australia)

Question 11: Book E

The description of book E says, “Australia’s premier mountain biking guidebook – taking you through a host of national parks and state forests.”

Here, biking = two wheels, national parks and state forests = bush,

So, the answer is: ii (The Bush on Two Wheels: 100 Top Rides)

Question 12: Book F

Take a look at the sentence given right under the table of ‘Meal Breaks’.

The description of book F says, “Here’s the A-Z of Australian native animals – take an in-depth look at their lives and characteristics, through fantastic photographs and informative text.”

Here, A-Z of Australian native animals & fantastic photographs and informative text = Encyclopaedia,

So the answer is: ix (Encyclopaedia of Australian Wildlife)

Question 13: Book G

Keywords for this question: employees working with food, must,

In the description of book G, we can see the phrase ‘prehistoric animals’ in the first line.

Here, prehistoric animals = Dinosaur,

So the answer is: iv (A Pictorial History of the Dinosaur in Australia)

Question 14: Book H

Keywords for this question: food handlers, ill,

The description of book H says, “A definitive handbook on outdoor safety – with a specific focus on equipment, nutrition, first aid, special clothing and bush skills.”

Here, outdoor safety & equipment, nutrition, first aid, special clothing and bush skills = survival techniques in the wild,

So the answer is: viii (Survival Techniques in the Wild)
